Are Hybrid Cars More Economical Than Regular Cars?

The shift away from diesel and gasoline cars has not happened as quickly as environmental lobbies would have hoped, and sales of new and used gasoline cars have remained steady. However, hybrid technology, which has been around longer than most people think in the automotive industry, is becoming increasingly popular with motorists, especially those who drive a lot in the city. The reason is simple: hybrid vehicles are undoubtedly more economical in city and stop-and-go traffic than gasoline or diesel vehicles.

A 100-Year-Old Concept

Hybrid technology is not a new concept, and the first hybrid car was built in 1899 by Ferdinand Porsche. It used a gasoline engine to generate electricity, which drove an electric motor. This in turn drove the front wheels. Today, more than 100 years later, the same principles apply – but the technology has of course evolved dramatically. So, hybrids are not new. What is new, however, is the idea that they are a viable alternative to single-fuel vehicles.

The main reason for the public’s increased adoption of electric and hybrid cars is twofold. On the one hand, there is concern that continued unchecked use of fossil fuels will accelerate the effects of climate change. The issue of emissions is therefore particularly important, especially in cities with high air pollution.

The second reason is a simple question of cost. Today’s hybrid cars meet both criteria. Not only do they produce fewer emissions than gasoline or diesel cars, they are also much more economical in the city. Cars like the Toyota Prius have sparked interest in hybrids and shown that practical, stylish cars can also be hybrids.

Where Are Hybrids Most Effective?

Hybrid cars are most efficient in city, commuter and stop-and-go traffic. Traditional gasoline and diesel cars are less efficient in these situations, but they are still the most efficient on country roads or for long trips. Since an electric motor has a limited range, hybrid cars focus on the electric side of the equation for short trips, then use the gasoline side of the powertrain for longer trips.

The introduction of brake energy recovery also means that hybrid cars have a greater range in the city than before. By using the energy lost during vehicle braking to recharge the vehicle’s batteries, range increases. However, since more braking occurs in the city than on the open road, this is only really useful in city traffic.

Emissions

The big selling point of hybrid cars is reduced emissions. Because the electric side of the powertrain is used in the city, less CO2 and other particles are released into the atmosphere when the roads are congested. This is not only better for the planet, but also for the health and well-being of the people who live in these cities. In an urban environment like Dubai, this reduction in emissions has an extremely positive impact for all parties involved.
